Will Barnes is a director at the New Mexico State Land Office where he oversees conservation and stewardship on state trust lands. He is an ecologist, attorney and teacher. He is also the winner of the 2022 Hillary Gravendyk Prize for Poetry for his second collection of poems called the artemisia. He is also the author of The Ledgerbook. His work has appeared in Crab Creek, Mudfish, Oberon, and Taos Journal of Poetry, among others. At Mesa, he worked on a series of poetic essays informed by his time as an ecologist that not only describe some of the environmental challenges we are facing, but also the real grief and sense of loss of land and wildness that we are all experiencing today.
